Gait analysis in Hornchurch and St Albans to understand how you walk, load and balance
A detailed assessment using pressure-mat technology to measure foot loading, gait and balance, combined with your musculoskeletal history and professional interpretation. Appointments are available at our St Albans clinic at Batchwood.
Pressure-Mat Analysis • Gait & Balance Measurement • Harrow Lodge, Hornchurch

Objective information about how you move
The pressure mat measures how forces are distributed through your feet during standing and walking. This can provide additional information about loading, symmetry, gait and balance that cannot always be seen through observation alone.
See how pressure is distributed across different areas of each foot.
Measure differences in loading between the left and right sides.
Assess pressure and timing patterns as you walk across the mat.
Measure centre-of-pressure movement and how weight is distributed during standing.
These measurements are interpreted alongside your history, symptoms and goals. The data is not used as a standalone diagnosis.
Who may benefit from a gait and balance assessment?
The assessment can be useful when the main question relates to walking, foot loading, balance or lower-limb biomechanics.
Walking concerns
Persistent discomfort, fatigue, or changes in posture during ordinary walking.
Recurring lower-limb problems
Repeated strain or unresolved issues across the hip, knee, shin, or ankle joints.
Foot or ankle loading concerns
Uneven weight distribution, arch strain, or localized pressure when standing or moving.
Differences between left and right sides
Noticed asymmetries in stride length, cadence, stance time, or shock absorption.
Balance concerns
Unsteadiness, loss of stability during daily transitions, or fear of tripping.
Running-related movement questions
Biomechanical queries around impact forces, foot strike pattern, and stride mechanics.
Return to activity
Transitioning back to sport, work, or routine exercise with verified functional symmetry.
Footwear or orthotic considerations
Assessing how prescribed insoles, orthotics, or different shoe styles alter ground contact.
People wanting objective information about their gait
Clear, data-driven insights into your movement patterns through pressure and kinematic metrics.
If you have a new injury, significant unexplained pain or symptoms requiring diagnosis and treatment, physiotherapy may be the better starting point.
What happens during your assessment?
We discuss your symptoms, relevant history, activities, footwear, and what you would like to understand.
You complete standing, balance, and walking measurements using our pressure-mat system.
The measurements are considered alongside your history and movement findings.
You receive an explanation of the findings and appropriate recommendations, which may include exercise, footwear advice, physiotherapy, further biomechanics, or orthotics where clinically appropriate.
More than a footprint
Our assessment technology measures objective movement data beyond what the eye can see, giving us clear insight into how your body interacts with the ground.
Peak plantar pressure
Pinpoints high-impact pressure spots across the sole during each phase of your step.
Pressure distribution
Maps how your weight spreads across the entire foot surface as you stand and move.
Left-to-right loading
Evaluates balance and weight symmetry between your left and right sides in motion.
Forefoot and rearfoot loading
Compares heel strike absorption with push-off mechanics at the front of the foot.
Gait timing
Measures contact duration, step cadence, and the natural rhythm of your stride.
Foot progression and pressure pathway
Traces the continuous line of pressure from heel contact through toe-off where available.
Centre-of-pressure movement
Tracks how your centre of mass shifts through space during every movement cycle.
Static balance behaviour
Assesses stability and postural sway while standing still on the sensor surface.
The purpose is not to label every difference as a problem. Human movement naturally varies between individuals. Measurements are interpreted in context to identify information that may be relevant to your symptoms, function or goals.

Measurement combined with clinical expertise
Numbers alone do not explain why somebody is experiencing pain or difficulty moving. PhysAnalytica combines objective gait and balance data with clinical information so that measurements can be interpreted in the context of the individual.
Capture objective pressure, gait and balance information.
Consider the data alongside symptoms, history and movement.
Use the findings to support appropriate advice, rehabilitation or further assessment where required.
When might orthotics be considered?
For some people, the assessment may indicate that further investigation of foot structure, footwear or orthotic options could be useful. Where clinically appropriate, PhysAnalytica can combine pressure information with 3D foot scanning to support the design of custom 3D-printed orthotics.
Orthotics are not automatically recommended following a gait assessment. Any recommendation should be based on the individual findings and clinical need.

Movement, balance and healthy ageing
Maintaining movement capability, joint articulation, and dynamic balance is central to remaining active, resilient, and independent as people age. Everyday autonomy depends on reliable ground interaction, symmetric muscular loading, and fast proprioceptive correction.
Our clinical assessments provide an objective baseline of how your neuromuscular and skeletal systems coordinate under load. We identify subtle compensatory shifts, restricted rotational capacity, and postural instability, providing targeted interventions that keep you moving with comfort and control.
