Clinical 3D optical foot scan and pressure-mat gait assessment in practice

Designed for the individual

Custom orthotics are different from generic insoles. The aim is to design the device around the individual's foot structure, loading pattern, symptoms, footwear and clinical requirements.

At PhysAnalytica, orthotic prescription can combine objective pressure information with a 3D scan of the foot so that both function and shape can be considered.

Pressure Data

Understand how pressure is distributed through the feet during standing and walking.

3D Foot Shape

Capture detailed information about individual foot geometry.

Clinical Context

Consider symptoms, activities, footwear and the reason an orthotic is being considered.

Orthotics are only recommended where the assessment suggests they are appropriate.

When might custom orthotics be considered?

Orthotics may be considered when additional support or alteration of pressure distribution could form part of an appropriate management plan.

Foot discomfort

Plantar pressure concerns

Recurring lower-limb symptoms

Walking- or running-related loading concerns

Footwear-related problems

Differences in loading between feet

Sports- or activity-specific requirements

Previous successful use of prescribed orthotics

People requiring a more individual solution than an off-the-shelf insole

How your orthotics are prescribed

1
Understand your needs

We discuss your symptoms, relevant history, activities, footwear, and why you are considering orthotics.

2
Pressure-mat assessment

We assess how you load through the feet during standing and walking, and consider relevant left-to-right differences.

3
3D foot scan

A detailed digital scan records the shape and dimensions of each foot.

4
Individual prescription

The assessment information is used to specify an orthotic design appropriate to your feet, footwear, and clinical requirements.

The final design is based on the combined information rather than a foot scan alone.

Measuring how you load, not just the shape of your foot

A 3D foot scan tells us about foot shape. Pressure-mat assessment provides different information: how forces are distributed underneath the feet during standing and walking.

Pressure Distribution

Identify where higher and lower plantar pressures occur.

Loading Symmetry

Compare how load is distributed between the left and right sides.

Dynamic Gait Information

Assess how pressure moves through the foot while walking.

Pressure differences are not automatically treated as abnormalities. They are interpreted alongside symptoms, function and the rest of the assessment.

3D Foot Scanning — A digital model of your feet

3D foot scanning captures detailed foot geometry without relying solely on standard shoe size or a generic mould. This information helps support the dimensions and shape of the prescribed orthotic.

  • Individual left and right foot scans
  • Detailed foot dimensions
  • Digital information used within the design process
  • No assumption that both feet are identical

The 3D foot scan does not diagnose medical conditions by itself; it provides precise anatomical measurements to inform a custom orthotic prescription.

From assessment to finished orthotic

Once the prescription has been determined, the orthotic is manufactured as a custom 3D-printed device rather than selected from a standard range of pre-made insoles.

The objective is to produce an orthotic suited to the individual prescription and the type of footwear in which it will be used.

01
Individually Specified

Designed from your assessment rather than selected by shoe size alone.

02
3D Manufactured

Digitally manufactured from the prescribed design.

03
Footwear Considered

The intended shoes, sport or activity are considered when selecting the appropriate orthotic configuration.

Orthotics are one option, not the whole treatment plan

For some people, orthotics may form one part of a broader approach that also includes physiotherapy, rehabilitation, exercise, footwear advice or changes in activity.

Physiotherapy
Assessment, treatment and rehabilitation where pain or injury is the main concern.
Gait & Balance
Objective pressure, gait and balance assessment where movement and loading are the main questions.
Custom Orthotics
An individually prescribed device where additional support or pressure modification is considered appropriate.
